As you go on any of the Uganda Hiking trips, why not try one of the top things that many visitors to Uganda seek, chimpanzee trekking? It will take you on a walk through the jungle in pursuit of the chimpanzees that are constantly hanging from one tree to the next, just like gorilla trekking.
In Uganda, there are various chimpanzee attractions with the major location for chimpanzee trekking being the Kibale Forest National Park.
This park is considered to be the greatest location in Uganda for chimpanzee tracking. In addition to getting to see chimpanzees, you’ll also get to view other primates including red-tailed and colobus monkeys, as well as 400 different kinds of birds and other animals.
Chimpanzee Trekking
Every journey to see chimpanzees begins very early in the morning with a briefing from the tour guides on safety precautions and protocol. You can view other primates and wildlife while trekking, including red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and a wide range of bird species.
The experience is flexible, where one can take the morning (AM) or an afternoon (PM) trek. Chimpanzee tracking lasts 2-3 hours where visitors depart from Kanyanchu Visitor Center at 8:00AM. Other primates visitors can see while tracking the chimpanzees include;
- The red-tailed monkey
- Black-and-white Colobus
- Grey-cheeked Mangabey
Your guides will show you pittas and other bird species, and they will describe the customs associated with various plant species found in the forest. Each tour group is limited to six people for this stroll. In times of peak seasons, visitors are advised to book in advance.
The Chimpanzee Trekking Permits
An official document that will allow you entrance to the chimpanzees in your Uganda Safari is a chimpanzee trekking permit. Similar to the gorilla trekking permit, only a certain number of permits are printed each day, and they are only good for the day they were printed.
Fewer licenses are issued in an effort to limit human-chimpanzee interaction as much as possible in an effort to protect them. There is little interaction since chimpanzees are susceptible to diseases.
How Much Is A Chimpanzee Tracking Permit?
The price of a Ugandan permit for chimpanzee tracking varies according to the tracking location.
Throughout each of them, a variety of tourists travel to observe chimpanzees. A chimpanzee trek permit in Kibale Forest National Park costs $200 per person per trek regardless of season.
Regardless of season, a chimpanzee permit in Budongo Forest (Murchison Falls National Park), costs $120, whereas Kyambura Gorge (Queen Elizabeth National Park) at $50 – cheaper option, excluding park fees.
Papaya Lake Lodge, Turaco Treetops, and other cozy lodging options are available when you go chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park.
