Adventurous travellers seeking a truly remote African safari will be thrilled to discover it in central Botswana. Central Kalahari Game Reserve is the second largest game reserve in the world and one of the least visited, nothing can prepare you for the sheer wonder of exploring this vast reserve with its wild, untouched beauty. The landscape is dominated by sand veld, acacias, and Kalahari apple-leaf, interspersed with grasslands and dotted with occasional sand dunes, pans and fossil river valleys. While the reserve is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, there is one animal that is rather obviously absent, the human being. It is this lack of human traffic, combined with the park’s lack of infrastructure that makes for a challenging and marvellously authentic African experience. Visitors need to be entirely self-sufficient but those willing to make the effort will be richly rewarded.
During your stay, explore the highlights of the reserve: Enjoy the exciting morning, afternoon and night safaris in custom built game viewing vehicles. You will have an opportunity to spot various animals such as the magnificent Kalahari lion, cheetah, leopard as well as giraffe and kudu. The elusive brown hyena has also been sighted occasionally. Night safaris reveal a fascinating world of nocturnal species. Deception Valley is also a popular birder’s paradise.
The San Bushman walk and the Naru-tribe: Staying at Deception Valley Lodge seems incomplete without experiencing the indigenous natives of Kalahari. The desert comes alive when sharing the eyes of those who have lived in the region for thousands of years.

The Savute goes through wet and dry cycles, where wild dogs hunt in the dry river channel where crocodiles swam only twenty years ago. Visitors to this spectacular area can spot abundant wildlife including: a variety of birds, elephants, antelope, lion prides, black-backed jackal, bat-eared foxes, tsessebe, kudu, hyena, cheetah Cape buffalo herds, and thousands of migrating zebra and wildebeest.

The Chobe River forms the northern boundary of the Chobe National Park which is renowned for its diverse and abundant game viewing opportunities. This section of the park is best known for its dense concentration of wildlife, including elephant and hippo populations, but the waters attract all manner of game including large herds of buffalo and the lions that prey on them – a visit to the Chobe River Front guarantees close encounters with an array of African wildlife. Sample a range of exciting activities such as 4WD along the banks; motorboat cruises; and rare birdlife spotting.
The engagements during the houseboat experience include:
Water based game viewing: Staying on board one of the Chobe Princesses is like being on a permanent game viewing vehicle, but with a much higher comfort factor. Situated in the heart of the Chobe region with access to river frontage of the Chobe National Park, you will be offered water-based game drives by a tender boat, allowing you to experience the enormous diversity and concentration of wildlife up even closer. Catch sight of huge herds of elephant as they swim across the water, as well as buffalo, lion, crocodile, lechwe, puku, giraffe, zebra, sable, kudu and the occasional leopard as they gather to quench their thirst at watering holes.
Sport Fishing: No trip to the Chobe is complete without trying your hand at a fishing safari where if you’re lucky, you may even catch a tiger fish. One of the greatest fighting fish in the world, the tiger fish is the most sought after prize of these waters and is known for its ferocious spirit. It's not all about tiger fish though. You may also hook one of the many bream species, African pike, tilapia, catfish or upper Zambezi yellow fish as you explore over 100 kms of the Chobe and Zambezi rivers, as well as the winding Kasai Channel and thrilling Chobe and Mambova rapids.
Birding at Chobe: With over 450 species, a mix of terrains and a dramatic African backdrop, the Chobe River is the perfect setting for a highly rewarding bird watching safari. Experienced birders and even eager amateurs will delight in spotting distinct birds such as African skimmers, rock pratincoles and the African fin foot, either through their binoculars or with the naked eye. Expect to view birds such as cattle egrets, fish eagles, open-billed storks, lesser-striped swallows, and pied kingfishers.
Cultural experiences: One of the best ways to learn more about a country is to experience its culture. A village tour while on board the Zambezi Queen will take you by tender boat to a local Namibian village called Ijambwe, situated on the floodplains of the East Caprivi. Meet village elders and locals for an insight into how the inhabitants of this 100-year old village live today. You will start by taking a slow, non-strenuous but sandy stroll through the village as you snap a few photographs and meet the Headman of the village as well as his children. Enjoy a display of traditional dances and singing at the end and join in the fun! You will as well go on a walking tour to a 2000-year-old baobab tree where you'll learn more about the medicinal and spiritual value of Impalila Island’s flora.
