Entebbe Eco Full Day Tour

Mabamba wetland is listed by Ramsar as a wetland of international importance. It is home to globally endangered bird species like the rare Shoebill stork and the beautiful blue swallow, close to half of the world’s population of this songbird is found here. It is a sanctuary for over 260 bird species. The wetland, that is only accessible via a canoe ride is located on the North West of Entebbe Peninsular, along the edge of Lake Victoria and got its name from the local fishermen due to a huge quantity of lungfish “Mamba”, the most sought-after fish by fishermen as well as a favourite food for the shoebill.

Apart from the shoebill, the other birds to expect include; Blue swallow, Pallid harrier, Papyrus Gonolek, Swamp flycatcher, Pigmy goose, Lesser jacana, Vie lot’s weaver, Grosbeak weaver, Black-headed weaver, Palm-nut vulture, Caruthers’s Cisticola, Papyrus canary, Malachite kingfisher, Gull-billed terns, Winding Cisticola, Goliath heron as well as Egrets.

From the Shoebill visit Uganda Reptile Village – A Community-Based Organisation established in 2003 to teach the community the importance of reptiles in the eco system and to encourage their conservation. It is home to 20 reptile species and over 50 reptiles including Black mamba, Jameson’s mamba, Rock Pythons, Vipers, Egyptian & Forest Cobras, Puff adders, Tortoises, Monitor lizards, Crocodiles together with Chameleons and many more. You’ll have the golden chance to touch and pause for pictures with snakes, get a feel of the colourful chameleons, hold young crocodiles in your arms and feed the mature ones without any harm.

Continue to explore wildlife at Uganda Wildlife Education Center:

This was established in 1952 with a major aim of rescuing and rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife. It is a collection of over 400 indigenous wild animals, 500 plant species and over 250 bird species.

Enjoy a close encounter with chimpanzees as you help their keeper to take care of them, you will also get close to lions and other beasts while you learn about their history. The animals protected here include; zebras, antelopes, monkeys and chimps, giraffes, cheetahs, rhinos, warthogs, lions and many more including birds like the shoebill, African fish eagle and reptiles.  The latest addition are two tigers!

From UWEC continue to visit: Kigungu Historical Site: Located on the shores of Lake Victoria. On this holy ground is where the story of the Catholic religion in Uganda begins, the first Catholic missionaries (Brother Amans and Fr. Mon Maple Lourdel) first landed here more than a century ago. Visit the nearby local Catholic Church built in the memory of these missionaries and a local fishing community where you will interact with the locals.

You will take a break for lunch and refreshment at a local restaurant.

After lunch the tour continues and ends with the National Botanical Gardens: This eco-zone found on the shores of Lake Victoria is an excellent spot for outdoor enthusiasts, with numerous shorebirds. It is highly commendable for its birding experience, nature walks, biking and be sure that you will come across some monkeys, please remember to share a banana with them. The National Botanical Gardens are a conservation area for over 300 tree species which have been in existence for centuries, most of which are known for their medicinal value. Feel the serenity of the cool breeze from Lake Victoria as you relax and unwind. 

From the gardens, be dropped off at your hotel or any other preferred location within Entebbe Town.
