Overview

The Equator Route Day Tour – It all begins with a stopover at the drum maker’s workshop to experience how the traditional drums “eŋŋoma” are made from tree-logs and cow hides. Visit the innovative Ugandan youths at the Social Innovation Museum; a place where plastic waste is transformed into sustainable products. This is followed by wildlife-human interactions at CTC Conservation Centre; you may get the chance to pose for a picture with any of the lions, zebra, impala and more. Proceed to Mpanga Nature Centre for an insightful nature walk –Enjoy two hours exploring the tree species, butterflies and birds of the forest. The tour is crowned with a photo opportunity at the Equator Monument –feel free to purchase a few souvenirs at the curios.

Get here and explore how Uganda’s traditional drums are created from common cowhides and tree logs; it is a fascinating process worth witnessing where the craftsmen use traditional tools and free-hands, you will also see the other local crafts on a roadside display (Mats, stools, calabashes, gourds, backcloth and more).

SINA is an NGO offering life skills to young single mothers, refugees, orphans, street children, former child soldiers and former sex workers.Join us in empowering the SINA Village which is aimed at transforming the livelihood of youth single mothers and other socially challenged youths; all the proceeds from your day visit, will aid the youthful minds in turning their social challenges into sustainable solutions. At SINA, plastic waste material is recycled into sustainable items (crafts and more) which are sold for a sustainable livelihood development. Your contribution drives sustainable projects such as: The use of plastic bottles in house construction |Conversion of organic waste into animal feeds and fertilizers |Making of durable school bags and fashion designs from polythene waste |Making of insect repellent detergents and reusable sanitary pads.

Visiting the CTC is on an appointment basis and requires a prior booking – not later than 48 hours. This premier eco-tourism destination (Privately Owned) was established in 2015 and it is still growing strong; the facility is majorly aimed at wildlife conservation and tourism development as well as offering exceptional human-wildlife interactions/experiences. Engagements whilst on the conservation site: Interaction with the young lions (3-6 months), Zebras, Impalas, Chameleon, iguana, Bat eared Foxes, Tortoises, baby crocodiles, numerous snakes and other animals. Explore how the caregivers go about their daily chores to ensure health and safety of the animals. The animals to expect: Two lemur species, zonkey, zebra, giraffes, Uganda Kob, impala, bushbuck sitatunga, grey parrot plus predators like: lion, tiger, African golden cat, genet cat, caracal and serval cat, black-backed jackal, spotted hyena, bat-eared fox as well as snakes and crocodiles.

You will take a breather for lunch at a local restaurant and continue exploring.

Mpanga Nature Center (Est. 2020) was gazetted to promote conservation and tourism in Mpanga Forest which was gradually getting depleted due to human encroachment through several activities. Today, Mpanga is a thriving destination for nature enthusiasts, with a conservation theme; “nature should be a sanctuary for all of us; where we can turn for comfort and serenity”. Enjoy a guided two-hour forest walk; exploring the numerous tree and plant species (over 500 species and herbs plus over 200 bird species). Your forest walk is highlighted by two magical trees; Zanthoxylum Challybeum (lemon scented knobwood) and Warburgia Ugandensis (green heart tree), which were combined to create a popular herbal mixture to fight COVID-19 in Uganda “COVIDEX”, by Professor Patrick E. Ogwang – These trees are found in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania only. You may also see the red-tailed monkey, vervet, b/w colobus, banded mongoose, squirrel, and pangolins, together with butterflies and birds like; black kite, palm-nut vulture, African harrier-hawk, African green-pigeon, Red-eyed dove, Klaus’s cuckoo, African palm swift, Woodland kingfisher and more.

Whilst at the Equator; take an iconic picture posing with one foot in the north and the other in the south pole. As well as explore how the sun rises and falls rather so fast at the equator, plus demonstrations of how water drains straight downwards contrary to the north and southern hemispheres. You will also find out that you are 3% lighter while at the equator line. Purchase a few souvenir at the curios to mark your visit.

Important Notes to Consider:

  1. Clients are advised to leave Kampala City or the suburbs not later than 06:00AM, since this route is very busy on traffic and requires an early start to avoid the inconveniences.
  2. CTC offers two visit sessions daily (10:00Hrs or 13:00Hrs) therefore, we may start with the Social Innovation Museum or CTC according to the day’s slots available at booking.
  3. This day tour can only be booked 48 hours prior to the preferred start date.
